Training
Each year, the ORC selects a training coordinator who has the responsibility to organize, plan and execute the training activities of the Club. Because Club members have differing levels of handler ability, the training format not only teaches the dogs through various retrieving drills, it also teaches the inexperienced handler how to work with his retriever breed so the dog can reach its natural potential.

Training sessions take place on upland prairie and water located near the Iowa Great Lakes in Spirit Lake, Iowa. The upland prairie training involves both tall and short grass conditions, physical and visual barriers, and simulated hunt situations.
In order to simulate hunt conditions, the Club utilizes popguns, bird launchers, and blinds, in addition to natural terrain features. Almost all marks are scented, rubber bumpers. Some dead fowl trainers are also used.
Dogs should heel, be obedient on leash and honor other dogs. E-collars are helpful but not required.
